A useful RFQ for custom metal can closures should do more than ask for a price. The supplier needs enough technical and commercial information to identify the correct closure family, check whether a standard size can be used, determine which sealing components are required, and decide whether a sample or drawing review is needed before production.
For projects involving finger press caps, threaded nozzles and screw caps, or related metal can components, the fastest quotations usually start with clear dimensions, photos, application details and quantity information. This checklist explains what to send and why each item matters.
Custom Metal Closure RFQ Checklist: What to Send First
| RFQ Information | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Closure type or current sample | Helps identify whether the project uses a press-fit, threaded, spout, lid or other closure structure. |
| Can opening dimensions | Nominal diameter alone may not define compatibility; surrounding dimensions and profile can also matter. |
| Drawing or clear photos | Shows geometry, opening position, thread profile, handle clearance and component relationships. |
| Required inner seal / liner / accessory | The outer metal closure may be only one part of the complete sealing assembly. |
| Product to be packed | Helps define material, liner and application requirements that need to be reviewed. |
| Material / finish requirement | Clarifies whether the project needs tin-plated steel, galvanized steel, printing or another specified finish. |
| Order quantity | Affects quotation, sampling approach, packing and production planning. |
| Destination country | Helps review packing, shipping and any customer-specified compliance requirements. |
1. Identify the Closure Type Before Asking for a Quote
If you already know the closure family, state it clearly. If not, send a photo of the can top and existing closure rather than guessing from the appearance.
Yuexin’s current metal can closure range includes:
- Finger press caps: standard 32mm, 42mm and 60mm fitting-diameter families.
- Threaded nozzles and screw caps: 18mm, 30mm, 32mm, 42mm, 47mm, 55mm and 70mm families.
- Thread profile options: selected 42mm and 70mm threaded closures include low- and high-profile versions.
- Related top-panel components: selected square can lids and riveted components can incorporate closure openings, handles or matching structures.
If you are still deciding between press-fit and threaded structures, see Press-On Caps vs. Screw Caps for Metal Cans.
2. Send the Actual Can Opening Dimensions
One of the most common sourcing mistakes is to provide only a nominal size such as “42mm cap.” That can be a useful starting point, but it may not be enough to confirm fit.
For a useful dimensional reference, provide as many of the following as possible:
- Opening / fitting diameter
- Outer diameter around the closure area
- Closure or nozzle height
- Thread height or profile for screw closures
- Flange or seating dimensions
- Distance from the opening to nearby handle, seam or panel edge
- Can top drawing or cross-section if available
For finger press caps, Yuexin’s standard 32mm, 42mm and 60mm families also have different outer diameters and total heights. For threaded closures, the 42mm and 70mm families can use different low- and high-profile structures, so the opening profile matters in addition to diameter.
3. Provide a Drawing, Sample or Clear Reference Photos
A technical drawing is the best reference when exact dimensions and tolerances are available. If you do not have one, a physical sample can be equally useful for replacement projects.
If neither is immediately available, send clear photos that show:
- The complete can top
- The closure installed on the can
- The closure removed from the opening
- A side view of the nozzle or cap profile
- Any inner cap, liner, outer seal or dispensing component
- Caliper measurements beside the key dimensions
A photo with no scale can identify the general structure, but it should not be treated as an exact dimensional reference.
4. Specify the Complete Closure Assembly, Not Only the Outer Cap
Many metal can closures are systems rather than single parts. If you request only “a cap,” the supplier may not know whether you also need the nozzle base, liner, inner cap, outer seal or dispensing accessory.
Finger Press Cap Projects May Include:
- Metal finger press cap
- Nozzle base
- Outer sealing ring or cover
- Plastic inner cap
- Dispensing spout
- Printed cap option
Threaded Closure Projects May Include:
- Threaded nozzle
- Screw cap
- Metal inner lid
- Pressure-sensitive liner
- Aluminum foil liner
- Plastic inner cap
- Pull-off inner cap
- Foam liner on selected configurations
If you do not know which component is required, send the existing assembly and explain how the package should open, pour and reclose.
5. Tell the Supplier What Product Will Be Packed
The packed product does not determine the closure by itself, but it affects the questions that need to be reviewed. Tell the supplier whether the container will hold, for example:
- Lubricants or industrial oils
- Paints or coatings
- Solvents
- Industrial chemicals
- Adhesives
- Household or daily chemical products
- Food or ingredient products subject to customer-specified material requirements
For regulated or food-contact projects, do not rely on a generic statement such as “food grade.” Provide the material, test, declaration or destination-market requirement your customer needs so the relevant component specification can be reviewed against it.
6. Define the Required Material and Surface Finish
If the drawing or customer specification already defines the material, include it in the RFQ. Yuexin’s current product families use material directions such as tin-plated steel and galvanized steel, with selected custom or alternative material options depending on the component.
Also state whether you need:
- Plain silver finish
- Galvanized finish
- Golden or coated finish on applicable models
- Custom printed cap
- Logo or operating instruction printing
- Specific color or branding requirement
If appearance is secondary to function, say so. This helps separate must-have requirements from optional preferences during quotation.
7. Clarify How the Closure Will Be Opened and Reclosed
The required user experience can help narrow the closure structure. Explain whether the package is intended for:
- One-time opening followed by dispensing
- Repeated screw-on / screw-off use
- Use with an inner seal that is removed on first opening
- Use with a dispensing spout
- Industrial pouring from a larger opening
For projects where repeated unscrewing and reclosing is important, a threaded closure is usually the first family to evaluate. For an existing press-fit can design, matching the current finger press structure may be more practical than redesigning the opening.
8. Provide the Expected Order Quantity
Quantity is not only a purchasing detail. It can affect the most practical route for sampling, custom printing, packaging and production planning.
Provide:
- Expected trial or sample quantity
- Estimated first production order
- Expected repeat-order volume, if known
- Whether multiple sizes or printed designs are included
If the project is still at the development stage, state that clearly. A supplier can then distinguish a technical evaluation from a confirmed bulk-order request.
9. Include the Destination Country and Packing Requirement
For export projects, destination country helps the supplier discuss shipping and packing more accurately. It is also useful when the buyer has market-specific packaging, labeling or material-document requirements.
If you already have a required packing method, include details such as:
- Pieces per carton
- Inner bag or protective separation requirement
- Pallet requirement
- Carton marking
- Export label requirement
- Maximum carton weight, if specified
10. Confirm Whether the Project Is Standard, Replacement or Custom
Tell the supplier which situation applies:
Standard Size Project
You already know that the can uses a standard Yuexin size family and only need to confirm the component combination, finish and quantity.
Supplier Replacement Project
You already have a working closure from another source and want to match it. In this case, the existing sample, drawing and installed photos are especially valuable.
New Custom Packaging Project
The can or closure is still being designed. Provide the latest drawing, intended opening method, packed product and target dimensions before tooling or production decisions are finalized.
11. Approve the Fit Before Bulk Production
For a new supplier, new can design or non-standard closure, a physical fit check is one of the most useful steps before a large production order.
Depending on the project, sample approval can verify:
- Opening compatibility
- Thread engagement
- Cap and nozzle fit
- Inner component assembly
- Clearance around the can top
- Opening and dispensing method
- Appearance and printing position
For the most critical compatibility decisions, an actual can sample or matched component set is more reliable than approving from nominal dimensions alone.
12. Separate Must-Have Requirements From Preferences
A clear RFQ becomes easier to quote when it distinguishes required specifications from optional preferences.
| Must-Have Examples | Preference Examples |
|---|---|
| Opening diameter and compatible geometry | Preferred cap color |
| Required thread profile | Alternative print layout |
| Specified inner seal / liner | Preferred carton size |
| Customer-required material specification | Optional decorative finish |
| Required order quantity and delivery target | Alternative branding position |
This prevents an optional preference from being mistaken for a technical requirement and can make supplier comparisons more meaningful.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I request a quote with only a photo of the closure?
A photo can help identify the general closure family, but dimensions or a physical sample are normally needed to confirm exact compatibility.
What if I know the cap diameter but not the thread profile?
Send a side-view photo, total height measurement and existing sample if possible. This is especially important for size families that have more than one profile.
Should I send the can sample or only the cap?
For a supplier replacement or custom project, sending both the can opening and closure sample gives a better reference for fit than the cap alone.
Do I need to specify the liner or inner cap?
If the existing package uses one, include it in the RFQ. If you are not sure, send photos of the complete assembly and explain the intended opening and sealing method.
What information helps Yuexin quote fastest?
The most useful starting package is a drawing or sample, opening dimensions, required component set, packed product, quantity and destination country.
